Health Happens in Libraries: Novateca and the Center for Health Policies Partner to Promote New Library Services for Moldovan Citizens

The Novateca Program and the Center for Health Policies (PAS) and Studies have teamed up to promote the role of libraries as contributors to community health and signed a Memorandum of Understanding underscoring the cooperation between health experts and Novateca libraries that has been developing for more than a year.

By supporting public library staff with resources to respond confidently to patron requests for health information, and tools to form partnerships with local community health experts, the Memorandum of Understanding enhances public library capacity to advance health and wellness priorities in the communities they serve.

Under the Memorandum, both parties will provide opportunities for public librarians to develop the necessary skills to support new technology and innovative library services related to health area. The Memorandum also aims to facilitate the initiation of specific programs and partnerships adapted to the needs of community members interested in the health and healthy lifestyle issues.

Over the last few years, a significant number of libraries noted an increased demand for information regarding healthy lifestyle and began conducting trainings on health in partnership with local medical institutions.

“By developing effective partnerships with health professionals and community agencies, librarians help visitors find health information and can motivate them to sustain healthy behaviors,” mentioned Evan Tracz, Novateca Program Director.

Currently, more than 56% of library users search for health information at the library. To address this situation, PAS will facilitate the usage of the e-Sanatate online platform by the local librarians and provide citizens with access to relevant information and opportunities by promoting and sharing information about resources, training programs, consultations, and events through the Novateca network of public libraries.

“The e-Sanatate.md platform offers librarians access to a wide range of information on health that can be promoted among community members in order to raise awareness and offer reliable information,” mentioned Viorel Soltan, Director of the Center for Health Policies.

The Memorandum of Understanding acknowledges the growing intersection of digital technologies and individual health management, and the opportunities for libraries to provide both physical and digital access to meaningful health education in their communities.
