If you are looking for a relaxed place to practice and improve your English skills with like-minded language learners, join the English Conversation Club at your local library! Unlike traditional English schools, these clubs allow you to practice your conversation skills and learn new vocabulary in an informal environment.

Since the fall of 2017, with funding from the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau, 77 libraries from 23 raions started to host English Conversation Clubs and engage youth and adults in a continuous process of learning and communication. More than 1,700 language learners, of which 66% are women and girls, meet weekly to converse and debate on various topics in the friendly and open environment offered by public libraries.

“Thanks to these interactive lessons, I have enriched my vocabulary and improved my school performance in English class,” mentioned a participant girl from Comrat.
The clubs are held in partnership with 39 young English teachers who help users learn and improve their English speaking, understanding, reading and writing abilities. Participants of all ages join the lessons to improve their English skills, enhance their self-confidence, and explore elements of a foreign culture.
“Children enjoy the non-formal ambiance offered by libraries, as they can express their points of view freely and socialize with their peers,” highlighted Ulyana Velceva, English teacher in Comrat. “We learn English watching educational movies, singing, using interactive tablet applications and games, and have fun getting to know a different culture.”

As English is now a global language for business and information, more and more adults in Moldova are constantly searching for opportunities to learn this language to advance careers. This is the case for seven representatives of the Social Insurance Fund from Telenesti who attend the club on a regular basis, learning to express themselves and improving their ability to access information from English-language sources.
We encourage everyone to ask their local librarian about the English language clubs, and use the library platform for non-formal learning and exchange opportunities.
