The Orhei Raion Public Library had the pleasure to welcome Vasile Botnari, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology for a visit on Wednesday, June 16.
The Minister was impressed with the library’s achievements and success and was particularly interested in the library modernization process of the 57 village libraries in the Orhei raion, all of which are part of the Novateca network. Library director Stepanida Tugui has also shared information about how the raion library supports local librarians with trainings and what kinds of new library services are organized for communities across the raion.
During the visit, the Minister toured the facilities of the libraries and met with the Novateca trainers, who were conducting a training for a group of pensioners on how to access online services. "Moldovan libraries have been gaining tremendous notoriety in the country thanks to the modernization process launched by the Novateca program. Moldovan public libraries are continually being equipped with computers and the number of visitors increases," mentioned the Minister during the library tour.
Novateca libraries’ activities are perfectly in line with the Digital Moldova 2020 Strategy goals. “Libraries promote e-governance tools, offer communication and Skype services, create online content, and train citizens in IT use. These and other library-led initiatives help advance Moldova’s development priorities and prove the relevance of the Moldovan library in reaching the objectives of this significant strategy," explained Novateca program director Evan Tracz.
The Head of the Culture Section Department of the Raion Council, Anatol Guriuc, has also emphasized the importance of the investments and trainings received by Orhei libraries, which helped them become modern community centers and improve people’s lives. He further mentioned that the Raion Council will continue to support the development of the libraries in Orhei and ensure sustainability of the library system modernization.
The visit culminated with a round-table attended by the Minister and a group of librarians from the Orhei raion and beyond, during which they discussed the partnership between libraries, various institutions and the state.
The Orhei Public Library is a leader in the Novateca network and has already registered success in attracting different categories of users. The library and its network benefited of computers and trainings, and LPA contribution of more than 1.6 mil lei. The motivation of Orhei librarians enabled the library to become a key place for joint activities that address community needs, connect disadvantaged children with their parents who live or work abroad, by means of modern technologies, and ensure access to specialized information, resources, and consultations to different categories of users.
