Today, May 18, 2012, Global Libraries Moldova and the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications and the Ministry of Culture signed a memorandum of partnership for the modernization of libraries, their equipment with computers and free Internet access.
Evan Tracz, Director of Global Libraries Moldova Program stated that "During 2011, IREX assessed the situation of the public libraries in Moldova and found that about 36% of the population, especially the rural one, has never used Internet. Many people miss economic and social benefits of access to the Internet, such as communication with distant friends and family, finding employment opportunities, etc. The evaluation also shows that the libraries are willing to fill the void of information in rural communities, and that they are appropriate institutions to bring the change to communities. These findings substantiated the direction of implementation of the Global Libraries Moldova Program, which over two years will modernize 60 public libraries both in urban and rural areas and over 100 librarians will be trained in 5 Regional Training Centres. The main aim of the program is to diversify the services offered by them."
The Minister of Information Technology and Communications, Pavel Filip, said he welcomes the implementation of this program and hopes that its successful implementation in villages will reduce the digital gap between urban and rural areas. Or, the public libraries are to become Community Centres to provide people free access to information and electronic services.
The Minister of Culture, Boris Focsa, said that until now there has been a vision to modernize the libraries and this project is to fill this gap. Consequently the public libraries will become platforms for communication and development in the territory.
According to the Ministry of Culture in Moldova there are 1385 public libraries, but only few of them have computers.
